The world of Raspberry Pi motherboard

In recent years, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has launched an amazing, low-cost, credit card-sized computer that connects to a TV or any other display device that has a HDMI or Video (RCA) input.

The primary goal was to make it easier for young people to learn computers, but this motherboard has been very successful, even with a few large companies.

Several models have been presented for sale, but the last one is by far the one that has emerged the most. This is the Raspberry pi 3.

The Raspberry range

The Raspberry is available in several models:

Description of Raspberry Pi 2, Pi 3

The Raspberry Pi 3 is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while the Pi 2 does not have one.

Since the price is practically the same for both, it is recommended to choose the Raspberry Pi 3.

Raspberry Pi Zero W and WH

Smaller than Pi 2 and Pi 3 but equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It is mostly used for robotics and home automation.


All these nano-computers use the Linux system. 

The best choice

The models that work the most are:

- Pi Zero W and WH that replace Pi A +, Pi B + and Pi Zero 1.3,
- Pi 3 is the same as Pi 2 but has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in additions.

Mandatory accessories

Since the Raspberry is sold naked, it will need to start it, to complete it with mandatory accessories :
- SD memory card :

This card will contain the operating system. It is recommended to use a card of at least 4 GB and at least class 4,

- External micro USB power supply :

This is a special charger providing precise voltage and minimum required current,

- An ordinary USB keyboard and mouse,

- An HDMI or RCA video cable to use a TV screen,

- Ethernet cable :

It is used to make the Internet connection with the router or the box (this cable is not needed for Raspberry Pi with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth).

A case is necessary if we want to protect the Raspberry from dust and handling with fingers.

Other accessories can be placed in this case to overcome the heating of the Raspberry. This is a cooling fan and heat sinks.

   The Raspberry mini computer, in all its models including the Raspberry Pi model B, uses an SD card on which the operating system Raspbian (Raspberry Pi and Debian merge) which is a free software is installed.

   It is equipped with an HDMI output cable to connect to a TV equipped with an HDMI port or to a touchscreen powered by Raspberry Pi.

   An adapter that goes in the USB port is provided to start it.

   A starter kit is often buyed with the Raspberry Pi computer including Raspberry Pi case, cooling fan and heat sinks.

   Among its features, it can be used as retrogaming emulator, home automation box, Kodi media center and video surveillance with camera model Raspberry Pi.

   Instead of the SD card that has a short life, the Raspberry Pi can boot to an external hard drive.
